There is a great difference between expectation and hope.  Several patients at St. Joseph Hospital can now attest to that aphorism, thanks to a life-changing gift this weekend.

On Saturday, April 17, 33 uninsured patients will receive donated outpatient surgeries through a partnership between St. Joseph Hospital of Orange and Access OC.  The surgeries will take place all day at the hospital’s Outpatient Surgery Pavilion.  Access OC is an organization that mobilizes medical volunteers to provide free surgeries to the uninsured.

One Access OC patient, Erika Abundez, will have a cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal) this weekend and has waited for more than a year for a miracle.  Unable to qualify for health insurance, Abundez ,34, of Santa Ana, is thankful, though her surgery will only make one change in her life – getting rid of constant abdominal pain.

“I don’t know how I would have received one if it hadn’t been for everyone involved. I’m happy that I am able to have it done,” says Abundez.  “It was a very expensive surgery for me to have and I am a little scared, but I’m putting myself in the hands of God.”

St. Joseph Hospital has been pivotal in recruiting new specialists into Access OC’s volunteer network.  St. Joseph Hospital volunteers include surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, operating technicians, schedulers, admitting personnel and other staff who will donate their time Saturday morning.  The volunteers are the base of Access OC’s success as they selflessly give of their time to improve the health of people in their community.

Another Access OC patient, Carmen Garcia, has waited nearly five years to remove a benign growth of excess eye tissue right eye.  Carmen will receive surgery to help relieve her ocular pain.

“I’ve been waiting for a long time for this surgery,” says Garcia, a Santa Ana resident. “I have redness and pain in my eyes whenever I am outside in the bright sunlight, even with sunglasses.”

The surgeries being performed are all medically necessary procedures that will dramatically impact the patient’s ability to work or care for their family. Among the procedures are cholecystectomies, pterygium removal and cataract surgery. The cataract surgeries will be   1st time the procedures are being done through Access OC. In many cases, the patients have been unable to work due to their medical conditions. Providing the surgery will put them back to work and will dramatically alter their daily lives.

“The patients being treated have been in pain and waiting for treatment for months and in some cases for several years. Without the kindness and generosity of these medical volunteers and the support of St. Joseph Hospital, they would continue to suffer and would eventually have to turn to a hospital emergency rooms for treatment” says Ruth Kurisu, Interim Executive Director, Access OC and Managing Director, Health Funders Partnership or Orange County.  “Access OC gets people out of pain, back to work and significantly reduces emergency room costs.”
